BJP 2024
Leader of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Mayawati has strongly publically urged the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to respect Kanshi Ram’s life and service by award him the Bharat Ratna. Among Dalits specifically, Kanshi Ram, the father of the BSP, is a highly significant figure in Indian politics. His most well-known student, Mayawati, has requested the BJP to quit misleading the Dalit people and show actual respect by acknowledging Kanshi Ram’s achievements.
Backdrop of Kanshi Ram
March 15, 1934 found him born in Ropar, Punjab. He developed into a powerful leader advocating for Dalit and other underprivileged group rights. Starting the BSP in 1984, he aimed to assist those under mistreatment and against racial prejudice. The work of Kanshi Ram was highly significant in enabling Dalits a strong political voice and increasing their political awareness.
What Said Mayawati?
Mayawati spoke about the BJP during a July 25, 2024 press conference. She criticized the party for utilizing Dalits as a vote bank while neglecting to really address their issues. But they should acknowledge Kanshi Ram with the Bharat Ratna, she urged. Mayawati underlined that the effort of Kanshi Ram transformed the life of millions of people and merits the highest civic respect in India.
The Ratna from Bharat
Given for extraordinary contribution for the development of art, culture, and knowledge as well as in recognition of public service at the lowest level, the Bharat Ratna is India’s highest civilian accolade. Only few leaders from underprivileged communities have received this prize since its founding in 1954. Giving Kanshi Ram the Bharat Ratna, according to Mayawati, will not only respect his memory but also convey a powerful message of equality and recognition of Dalit accomplishments to society.
Political Reperceptions
Given the BJP’s preparations for the next general elections, Mayawati’s allegation is timely. In many states, Dalit votes are significant, hence the BJP has been striving to project itself as a party that respects all spheres of society. By requesting the Bharat Ratna for Kanshi Ram, Mayawati is encouraging the BJP to exhibit allegiance to Dalit growth.
The contributions made by Kanshi Ram
Kanshi Ram’s political path was defined by unrelenting efforts to challenge the Indian caste structure as it stood. Rallying Dalits and other backward sections, he helped them to develop political unity and identity. Under his direction, the BSP developed from a little party into a key player in Indian politics. The success of the party was heavily influenced by his social engineering strategy, which included forming alliances with other underprivileged groups.
The Legacy of Mayawati
Often called Behenji, Mayawati is Kanshi Ram’s most well-known student. Four times she was Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state’s Chief Minister. The BSP established many measures targeted at social justice and economic progress for the underprivileged under her direction. Many parks and monuments honoring Dalit luminaries, notably Kanshi Ram, were created during Mayawati’s lifetime.
Reevaluation of the BJP
Mayawati has been a vocal opponent of BJP Dalit policy. She accuses the party of symbolic movements devoid of actual action. She claims that the BJP’s attempts to attract Dalit people are flimsy and devoid of any will to uplifting them. By asking for the Bharat Ratna for Kanshi Ram, Mayawati is exposing the double standards of the BJP.
The Future Ahead
Giving Kanshi Ram the Bharat Ratna can have big consequences. It will not only honor his memory but also help Dalits feel more pride and identity. For the BJP, it would be an opportunity to demonstrate its dedication to transparent politics. Still to be seen, however, if the government would answer Mayawati’s appeal.
Public Attitude
The response to Mayawati’s appeal has been divided generally. Although many Dalits and BSP supporters have commended her for honoring Kanshi Ram’s heritage, others saw it as a political ploy meant to garner electoral momentum. Discussions on the issue have been rife on social media thanks to hashtags like #BharatRatnaForKanshiRam emerging on Twitter.
The Historical Context
There is a long history of demand for national honors honoring Dalit leaders. Leaders like B. R. Ambedkar have received the Bharat Ratna dead in the past in recognition of their efforts toward social justice and equality. Given his relentless attempts to better the underprivileged, Kanshi Ram’s supporters believe he too merits this prize.
Dalit Icons: Their Part
Modern India has been created in great part by Dalit leaders like Kanshi Ram and Ambedkar. Their achievements transcends politics; they have motivated generations to defend their rights and dignity. Honoring such luminaries with national honors is a means of appreciating their influence and extending their legacy.
